Fishing report week ending 2 July 2017

The winners of the Sierra pairs competition at the Loch are, Alan Martin and Marco Ezzi. They had there limit by one o`clock and held on to the biggest bag of the day. They qualify for the final along with second, third and fourth placed pairs from the day. Anglers had done there homework on the Loch for the days leading up to the competition. So well done to the qualifiers. Yellow sedgehogs fished dry or hoppers or crunchers pulled slowly on a ghost tip line were the best methods this week. Close behind was candy booby or a fab on the point, on a midge tip line with two diawl bachs. Local man David Paterson had 20 on c/r doing just that. The anglers that were out practicing for the sierra pairs did not want to put anything in the catch report. As competition anglers do not want to give away the information that they have worked to get. It is safe to say that on Saturday many anglers had over 20 fish on c/r. Anglers that did well and are in the catch returns I. Crighton 5 for 11.12lb and 8 on c/r on sedgehog, J. Stuart 5 for 10.5lb and 8 on c/r on sedgehog also, E. Brophy 15 on shipmans buzzer on c/r, T. Cherrie 5 for 10.13lb and 1 on c/r on muddler, C. Sumerville 5 for 10.10lb and 2 on c/r on black buzzer, Paul Clarke 5 for 10.9lb. Luggiebank 12 for26lb and 2 on c/r.

It is very sad news that fellow angler Neil Mitchell, a member of SPRA Fly Fishing Section passed away on Tuesday morning at the Loch. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to his family and friends at this sad time.

Fishing Report Week Ending 25 June 2017

Outstanding and well done. A huge thank you must go to every angler who fished at the Scottish youth team fund raiser on Sunday. Also everyone who donated prizes. It was a great effort from everyone, and one we are very privileged to be a part off. A total of £1192.00 was raised for the team. So well done to all for supporting our Scottish team. It was not great fishing conditions due to the weather on Sunday, but that did not slow down top rod on the day, Billy McGranagan who caught 9 and won a rod. The best youth was Connaire Diver with 7. He also won a rod.
Good catches this week Anderson 5 for 13.2lb on cormorants, A. Smith 8 on c/r on Portmore Devil, E. Neil 6 on diawl bachs, Gary McGinley 15 on dries, McBride and Shaw 10 on c/r on dries, Sam Montgomery 12 on dries, Bibios 12 on c/r. The  hot spots are both reedy bays, Forest bend and the high banks. A ghost tip line with hoppers pulled wet, or cormorants fished in the top 12 inches were the most consistent last week. The water is gin clear and in great condition. Stocking weekly.
SIERRA PAIRS.
This Sunday is our first ever Sierra pairs competition at the Loch. There are still 4 boats available for the day. Do you fancy a try at competition fishing with the chance of winning great prizes. Details can be found on the web site. Please phone to get booked in. You can leave it to the last minute, but Phil who runs the competition needs to know how many packs he needs to bring. The anglers who have entered are sure to have a great day with there partner in the boat. Look for next weeks report to see who won on the day.
Tight lines to all.

Fishing Report Week Ending 18 June 2017

Husband and wife team of Johny and Nicky Ross were the top rods this week with 20 on c/r fishing Nikkis cormorant. Close behind were Gary McGinley and Pelini with 18 on c/r on dries and sedges. Fire service had 29 for 64.3lb and 12 on c/r, A. Ballantye 5 on c/r on yellow owl, Stuart sneddon 11 on c/r on cdc and buzzer, James Marshall 5 for 11lb, on cdc, sedgehog and olive dabbler, N. Muir 5 for 10.10lb. Best area was the high bank and best line was a floater. Cormorants and sedges are getting the best bags. With warmer weather this week the sedges and mayfly are in abundance. The trout can be seen all over the Loch gorging on them.

Sunday is our fundraiser for the Scottish youth team. We still have a couple of boats left for the day. A big thank you must go to David Ezzi for organizing the event. There will be a auction and raffle at the end for various fishing items including a rod, Hardys reel, fly line etc. Please come along and support your Scottish youth team. Any donations or prizes will be greatly accepted for the event. A lunch will be provided for all the anglers in the boats. The raffle and auction will be held about 4.30pm at the end of the fishing.

Next weekend is the Sierra pairs competition with great prizes. This is a first for the Loch. Get booked in and enjoy a great day with a great goody bag just for entering. You can leave it to the last minute, but we need to know, so Phil can bring enough goody bags with him.

The Loch is in great condition for fishing and we continue to stock weekly.

Fishing Report Week Ending 11 June 2017

Even with all the rain the Loch is fishing great. The water is gin clear and the fish are on the naturals. This is the time of the year when fly fishers put on the floating line and really enjoy fishing. There is nothing more enjoyable than casting a dry fly in front of a feeding trout, then watch it take your dry and you are in. Then let battle commence. Sedges are on the water in numbers. They are about a inch long and the trout can be seen mopping them up. Also the adult damsels are hatching now. They are beautiful and plentiful to the trout. They can be seen hatching around the edges from the weed beds. A stealthy approach in the boat works best in the summer, and please keep seated. Anglers standing and moving about in boats may put of the educated trout in that fishing area. So it was a tale of two opposites last week. Yellow owl dries or sedges on a floating line, or a slow sinking line with a inch long damsel. Both caught as many fish as the other. Black hoppers are starting to take good numbers of fish now. Pulled slowly on a midge tip line. Hot spot at the moment is all the way along the high bank.

This Saturday is our through the night session. We forgot that the International football was on. So we understand that there might be some hangovers and not many fishing. We shall find out. Please phone up the Loch and get booked in.

Only three weeks to go for the Sierra pairs competition at the loch. Please fill in the form on the web site for the Sierra pairs and get the Black Loch date filled in.

Anglers that did well, Paisley Patterns 30 for 64lb and 3 c/r, J. Ferrier 5 for 10.14lb, G. McGinley 6 on c/r, D. Bowie 10 on c/r, A. Veith 5 for 10.2lb and 2 on c/r.

Fishing Report Week Ending 4 June 2017

Top rod this week was Jim McBride with 22 on dries on c/r closely followed by D. Tyrie with 17 on c/r on dries. Heriots had a good evening with 2 for 9.8lb and 44 on c/r, TRC had 25 for 86.7lb and 22 on c/r, Chris Stoneley had 3 for 7.3lb and 10 on c/r on dries, Gary McInley and G. Pelini had 14 on c/r on dries, G. Bruce and A. MacRitchie 6 on c/r on dries, Pencaitland 40 for 85.6lb. David Fraiter had a good 3 fish permit with a stunning 6lb fin perfect torpedo of a rainbow on his day at the water. The picture will be on the web site soon. Even with all the rain the Loch is gin clear and fishing great. As you will notice from the returns, the big numbers are coming to the dries. Orange blobs had a good week also on a slow sinking line. The Loch is fishing well at the moment. The hot spots are all over. Boats on the drift, are doing bigger numbers than boats at anchor. Last week rod average was 4.1 and average weight was 2.2lb. We are looking forward to the Sierra pairs competition in a few weeks and also the float tube evening. Get the tubes dusted down and have a great evening on the Loch with other tubes! Remember to phone up and get booked in. 07527 254811. Boats are available for this weekend, so phone up and get booked in.

Fishing Report Week Ending 28 May 2017

The weather was hot and so was the fishing. Top of the water sport is fantastic at the moment. Anglers on a floating line with traditional flies, caught far more trout than anglers on any sinking line and lures. Nature has provided an abundant food source for the trout in the water. So in the summer when the trout are switched on to the natural food larder, we need to imitate that. Lures will catch fish, but at the moment you will be out fished by your partner in the boat on traditionals. We stock weekly and the fish are in great condition. This week we have a lot of fish in the 4lb to 6lb range coming. The big brown trout was hooked twice last week. We reckon it is about 12 to 14lb in size. it is swimming about with what looks like a yellow damsel in its mouth. Two separate anglers hooked it and played it and seen it, but could not bring it finally to the net. Both got snapped and they seen the fly in its mouth. Now it has more in it, till they fall out. This will be the fish of a lifetime for one lucky angler. Evening sessions finish at 10.30pm for the moment and are well worth a try, as the trout love to feed in the grey dark. Anglers and clubs that did well this week, Dunfermline Railway 30 for 62.10lb and 17 c/r, Falkirk Fly dressers 16 for 35.8lb, Penicuik A.C. 33 for 64.6lb and 20 on c/r, Keir Hardie 5 on buzzers, R. Thomson 5 for 10.7lb and 5 on c/r on buzzers, S. Thomson 5 and 5 on c/r, s. Mclean 10+ on c/r on dries, c. Stephens 10+ on dries on c/r, John Milne 11 on c/r on fabs, Western A.c. 6 for 13.4lb and 65 on c/r.

Sierra pairs competition is just five weeks away. Please fill in the entry form on the web site and get yourself in the mix for the chance of winning some of the best prizes in trout fishing.

Fishing Report Week Ending 21 May 2017

The big Sedge is here. They have arrived in big numbers again this year and with the hot weather they are big already. They are about an inch long and the normal molted brown colour. The evening sessions are having great sport on the dry. With the hot weather during the day. The water erupts in the evening with trout all over the Loch feeding. You feel like you could walk across the water on the back of them. There is that many feeding on the surface. Evening sessions finish at 10.30pm for now. That will get later as the nights get longer.

Remember your sun cream and water. You can get cooked in a boat without knowing it, until you come in off the boats with the panda eyes. Look after yourself with plenty of fluids, and sun cream.

Alan Martin caught some stunning fish this week, and the bibios for the kids had a good evening on Tuesday with two brown trout caught. One about six pound and one about eight pound. All safely returned. The pictures will be on the web soon. Well done to the youngsters.

Even during the day with the hot weather the Loch has fished great, with good numbers being caught. Both reedy bays and the heather hills were the hot spots. Floating line and dry. Yellow owl and sedge being the best.

Good returns this week, Edinburgh Walton 26 for 56.11lb and 15 c/r, M. McNaughton 12 on c/r on dries, T. McMillan 11 on c/r, D. Wales 13 on snails and nymphs, D. Cooper 7 on c/r, Mark Laird 8 on c/r on yellow owl, Rainbow A.C. 22 for 48lb and 18 c/r, St. Peters 33 for 71lb and 15 c/r on cdc, Steven Burke 9 on c/r on fab and black cruncher, S. Robertson 16 on cdc and buzzer.

The trout are not fully switched on to the sedge yet. When they do it will make top of the water sport even better.

That is the anglers dream.

Fishing Report Week Ending 14 May 2017

Red and green diawl bach, and damsel nymphs did well this week. The wind was blowing from the East, so it made things a lot cooler on the surface. A midge tip line was the most consistent this week as the cold wind put off big hatches on the surface. The weather is to get warmer this week and to settle down towards the weekend. The warmer weather should bring back on the buzzer hatches again. The heather hills and the high bank were the hot spots last week. The water clarity is great on the Loch and the massive shoals of fry seen swimming about the jetty is great. Some big trout are on the fry already. We are eagerly awaiting the big sedges that will be coming soon. The trout love them and know they are a good meal not to be missed. Anglers that did well last week, Luggiebank 30 for 62lb and 9 c/r, Gartmore 34 for 71.4lb and 31 c/r, Falkirk Municipal 32 for 68.5lb and 16 c/r, Craig Gibbons 5, D. Forsyth 3 for 9.8lb and 5 c/r, F. Kerr 3 for 9.6lb and 4 c/r, 1314 A.C. 26 for 68lb. Evening sessions finish at 22.00pm for now, but will soon get later by about 15 minutes a week.

Remember and get your name down for the float tube evening and the all nighter. They should be great. Also support the local Strathcarron Hospice fund raiser at the Loch run by David Symon and his family. Phone the lodge for more information.

Last thing, The sierra pairs are holding a heat at the Loch. Not to be missed. You know the drill. Get your name down and book a boat. Tight lines.

** Note from web designer - I am on holiday until May 31st so there will be no report published on website or blog next week.  Will catch up on them when I'm back home.**

Fishing Report Week Ending 7 May 2017

The Loch is fishing great. The catch return numbers are impressive. The average weight is 2.5lb and the rod average is 4. We should really stop there, as that is a good report.

Anglers that did well this week, D.E.A.F. club 15 for 30.10lb and 31 c/r, Bonnybridge 33 for 73.9lb and 6 c/r, IBM 50 for 107.14lb and 8 c/r, St. Mungos 12 for 24lb and 5 c/r, Aberdour A.C. 44 for 92lb and 5 c/r, Scotland Youth Team 69 on c/r, David Fraiter 3 for 6.12lb and 6 c/r. The best method was ghost tip line and best flies were black hopper, yellow owls and diawl bachs on a size 14. This week the wind is to be all over the place from East to West , to North East and every other direction. That will certainly change the hot spots. The fish that were spooned were full of olive buzzers and a small black ant about a size 14. One trout had about 20 of the ants in its stomach as well as cased caddis. We had two anglers from Oban that came to the Loch on Saturday and had a great day. They enjoyed it so much that they are making the long trip again and coming back on Wednesday this week. We really appreciate all the anglers that come to the Loch and we will always try to make it a good day out for the angler. But they have to catch there own trout. The bibios for the kids had 13 on Tuesday evening. Evening sessions finish at 10.00pm for now. But will get later as the nights draw out. We are getting excited about the sierra pairs competition at the Loch this year. Places are filling up. Please phone the lodge and get your name down for the competition. It has great prizes. This year we have the float tube evening, the all nighter and the yearly Strathcarron fundraiser run by Davy Symon. Again please phone the lodge and get a place booked for some, or all the upcoming events.

Fishing Report Week Ending 30 April 2017

The Loch fished very well last week. The numbers are impressive. Keatings 5 for 10.10lb and 10 c/r, S. Robertson 8 on c/r on buzzer, Bothwell and Blantyre 63 for 135.9lb and 21 c/r, Paisley Patterns 25 for 53.2lb and 7 c/r, Robbie Sutherland 12 on c/r on fabs and diawl bach, Billy and Marco 26 on c/r on drys and wets. The weather was steady last week, and that makes good fishing conditions. On Sunday the wind picked up and changed to the East making things harder for the anglers. Warmer weather is predicted for this week, but still a East wind. Lures will always pick up some fish, but again this week anglers on the more natural flies did better. Using a lure on the point, like a fab or booby is great at getting the trouts curiosity. Then droppers with the naturals on do well to catch the educated trout. This week again a yellow buzzer is on. Anglers that spooned the fish say they were full of yellow buzzers. Some were falling out the mouths of trout when they were being dispatched, they were that full. School bay and the high banks were the hot spots, and ghost tip line was the best.

The bibios for the kids start this Tuesday. Phone the Lodge and get your kid fishing in a great environment, with tuition to help them start fly fishing or improve there current skill level. The bibios are on a Tuesday night and finish at dusk. Ask David at the lodge for more information.

Remember there will soon be a float tube evening, and the first night session on the Loch. Phone the lodge and get booked in.

Well done to David Ezzi and Alan Martin for qualifying through to the second round of the nationals.

Friday 28 April 2017

Fishing Report Week Ending 23 April 2017

Gary McGinley started the week of with a good catch of 12 on cormorants and fab, then on Tuesday G. Welsh had 14 on crunchers, then Steven Walker 14 on red diawl bachs. Dave MacTaggart 13 . The numbers caught were impressive. All week the Loch fished well. Edinburgh post office had 40 on c/r on buzzers. The average rod catch during last week was 5. The weather is to be very mixed this week and colder so that will change tactics again.

Again fishing near the surface is where most action is. The heather hills and school bay are full of fish at the moment. Anglers fishing there are getting big bag numbers at the moment. Washing line method with a fab or booby on point and two droppers with crunchers or cormorants is doing very well. Also straight line buzzers worked well. It is a olive buzzer that is coming off at the moment. About a size 10.

Notice

Evening sessions start this Monday, 1st May from 5.00pm till dusk.

Remember we are holding an all nighter at the Loch and a float tube evening session in the summer. Phone the Lodge and book your place.

Wednesday 19 April 2017

Fishing Report Week Ending 16 April 2017

Vic Donatti had a red letter day session on the Loch on Thursday. He had 28 on c/r on crunchers. I think that is the most caught by one angler on a day ticket. The weekly stocking did not go in till Friday. So it was not fresh stockies. He did not want to get out the boat, he was having such a good day. Well done Vic. That same night Robert Thomson from Westquarter had 10 on c/r. We still stock weekly and as many anglers do c/r now the Loch has more fish than ever. We have approximately 1000 extra fish than normal, so anglers are in for plenty of action. The buzzers are on. So we would recommend putting away the Lures and going small and natural. Lures will work all year round. But the better bags and better fish will normally be caught on something that imitates the natural food source. Right now that is buzzers. The heather hills is still a hot place to be, and both North and South reedy bays have switched on. The water is still cold so the margins are holding fish. Fishing close in means being quiet in the boat. A stealthy quiet approach and stay seated all help, to not spook the fish. Anglers and clubs that did well, Steve Burke 10 on c/r on buzzers, Billy McGranigan 9 on c/r, Kelvinside A.C. 17 for 35.1lb and 20 on c/r, A.B.C. and D. 43 for 87.2lb and 8 c/r, G. Seiviwright 5 for 10.2lb and 5 on c/r, A. Lidsay and A. Dolton 6 for 13.6lb and 4 on c/r. A special mention must go to Pat and Archie Ure. One is aged 88 and the other 89. Fishing for the first time at the Loch they had 5 for 14.6lb and booked a boat for next week also. A slow glass or floater was the best line this week with crunchers, buzzers and booby's doing well on the washing line.

Remember to book a place for our first ever early morning session and our float tube evening is also a first.

Wednesday 12 April 2017

Fishing Report Week Ending 9 April 2017

The weather was good at the end of last week. It made for great fishing conditions. A few browns between the five to seven pounds were caught on c/r. Also a few rainbows in that size were also caught on c/r by the visiting clubs. The heather hills is still the place to be. Why that area is holding so much fish for so long is a mystery. There must be a food source, so we assume that the buzzers must be coming of there in numbers. The most consistent method was with a midge tip line, and using the washing line method, of a booby on the point. Then a cruncher and diawl bach on the droppers, fished static. The wind is to pick up this week, so that might change things . Another big stocking of blues are due this week. We love the blues and so do the anglers. They are great trout to look at and real heavy weights at the fighting. Good catches this week, Billy McGranagan 9 on c/r on crunchers, St. Johns 6 for 15lb and 48 on c/r, Dunfermline Artisans 20, G. Picken 7 on c/r on humungus, C. Stoneley 3 for 6.4lb and 7 on c/r.

BIG NEWS

We are having our first through the night session starting just after midnight on Saturday till Sunday morning at 8.00am. That is the 11th of June.

Float tube evening on Sunday the 23rd July. So look out and dust down the tubes. Get the flippers ready and have a great time.

They should both be great events. Phone and book your place.

Tuesday 4 April 2017

Fishing Report Week Ending 2 April 2017

The Loch is fishing great at the moment. Damsel nymths, cormorants, booby, diawl bach and buzzers are all catching. So the fish are just on. The hot spot is still drifting in to the cottage at the heather hills. It is holding a lot of fish at the moment. A slow glass line was the best this week, with drifting the best method. Good catches this week were C. Stonelee 3 for 6.12lb and 3 c/r on cormorants, A. park 3 for 8.4lb, Willy McFarlane 8 on c/r on booby and cormorants, A Lindsay 13 on c/r on crunchers, A. Bolton 8 on c/r on crunchers, David Fraiter 8 on c/r, D. Black 2 for 4.2lb and 4 on c/r,R. spears 8 on c/r on black and red buzzer, D. Patterson 5 and 3 on c/r on buzzer, I. McLaren 5 and 1 on c/r on buzzer, R and D macKie 12 on c/r on damsel, G. McIntosh 4 for 10.10lb on dancer, I Young 3 for 8.8lb, Ferry Fly Dressers 27 for 66.6lb and 2 on c/r, Strathy A.C. 34 for 75.4lb and 7 c/r, David Ezzi, Marco Ezzi, and Billy McGranigan in one boat 32 on c/r on diawl bach and bibios, St. Mungos 13 for 29.6lb and 7 on c/r, S. Weir 5 for 12lb. Keep checking the web site. we are going to be holding a float tube evening at the Loch as well as, a through the night session. Details will follow soon.

Tuesday 28 March 2017

Fishing Report Week Ending 26 March 2017

It was a bumper week for some anglers at the Loch. Regular John Middleton had a cracking 6lb11oz over wintered rainbow with a tail like a spade and fought like mad. But the best boat this week was S. and T. Moody with 22 on c/r on boobies, buzzer and cormorants. Close behind with 18 to the boat on c/r was Andy McAdam and Scott Aitken on fabs and crunchers. Also Stevie from the Falkirk Fly Dressers had 9 on c/r. Fred Padon had 5 on c/r fishing black and green. Phoenix A.C. had 12 for 30.5lb and one on c/r. The hot spot is definitely at the heather banks in front of the cottage. David Ezzi was out for three hours and had 16 from there. That is where the boat that had 22 was fishing also. So that area is well worth a try. The weather is certainly to be warmer this week so the fish will become even more active. A big stocking of blues are coming this week so I am sure we are in for another bumper week. Midge tip lines or a fast glass, are all that are needed at the moment with a slow or steady retrieve. Fast pulling is not working at the moment. The fish that were spooned are on the buzzers now. Andy the head warden from Rutland was telling me today that they are on the buzzer also. That is early for the naturals to be moving up the water column. But if the buzzers are on, the fish are feeding and you should get some great sport. Phone 07527 254811 to book a boat. Remember we are hosting a heat of the sierra pairs competition this year. Phone the office or check out the web site for details and get booked in.

Monday 27 March 2017

Fishing Report Week Ending 19 March 2017

The season has started great with some big catches. The weather has been so mixed that it might have put the fish off. But the trout are still being caught all over the Loch. In fact it is bubbling with fish at the moment. There is a lot of big, and we mean double figure big fish, with tails like shovels cruising about at the moment. Because they have had a break for most of the winter, they seem to be throwing caution to the wind at the moment and taking anglers flies at all depths. Small Lures and cormorants seem to be the best fly. With the black and green combination doing well. In the last two weeks we have had over 11 double figure trout safely returned on catch and release tickets. As the anglers were on catch and release we don't know the exact weight. But it looks like it is going to be a bumper season. With the trophy fish of a lifetime for some anglers. The hot spots are everywhere and in the top four feet of water. We have over two ton of blues ordered for this years stocking. So be ready for grumpy, hard fighting fish that will not want to meet you. Can you rise to the challenge? We are also very pleased to be hosting a heat of the Sierra pars competition this year. Please register with them and get your date and boat booked in at the Loch. With a chance to win huge prizes in the final. Contact Alex on 07527 254811 for all your bookings.
